Social inequality playlist *– 10% of final grade. Starting early in the semester (and continuing through most of the semester), you will create an annotated playlist of one of the following: songs, books, newspaper/magazine stories, TV shows or movies that focus on issues related to social inequality. You’ll have free reign over which issue(s) you choose to highlight in your playlist. You must research your topic independently. But you are encouraged to be creative. This assignment uses the same research and writing skills needed to create an annotated bibliography – but should be more fun! · Each playlist must include approximately 6-8 songs or newspaper/magazine articles (or 3-5 books or 3-5 TV shows or movies) including annotations for each. Each entry must be accompanied with the following information: o Artist(s), Author or Director o Genre o Year the song, book or movie was released; publication dateline for newspaper/magazine articles. · Projects are expected to be no shorter than 6 pages and nor more than 16 pages (double-spaced) not including a cover page, and/or citations list. · While I encourage a creative approach to this assignment, each playlist must include the following: o Original thought/writing: your own thoughts expressed critically and clearly (approximately 6-16 pages). o Quotes—from course readings, films, and podcast materials o Lyrics/melodic expression/music video scenes explanations—evidence derived from the song, book, articles, TV show or movie itself. · Page count is based on 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper – however, you may use creative curation tools like Wakelet or (or other presentation software) to share your work with the class. · Due date: TBA. Start early and work on it throughout the semester. (*Assignment adapted from material kindly shared by Letisha Engracia Cardoso Brown, PhD.
