As the course resources have demonstrated, there is a lot of research being done on the brain helping us to understand the neuroscience behind why Mindfulness works for many people. The goal of this question is to demonstrate an understanding of how neurological, behavioral, and physiological impulses are created and the effects that Mindfulness can have on changing these impulses within individuals.
Here are some working definitions to support you in connecting these discussion questions with your readings this week:
Cognition: the mental action of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
Mindfulness: a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment; the state of being conscious or aware of something.
Physiological impulses include strong emotions or feelings including hunger, lack of hunger, numbness, pain, tingling, headaches, sweating, increased heart rate, dry mouth, or “butterflies in your stomach.”
Neurotransmitters are secreted by nerve cells to transmit “messages.” Neurotransmitters include dopamine and serotonin; these influence neurons in a particular part of the brain, which directly impacts behavior.
Part 1:
Analyze how practicing mindfulness can change someone’s biological mechanisms or responses; or physiological impulses? Provide general examples related to these effects.
Part 2:
Present a specific example of a workplace situation in which the behaviors and/or impulses that occurred created a challenging situation.
Based on the research, examine how can the practice of Mindfulness by individuals, or in the workplace, support these types of workplace situations? How might that situation have been different, or change in the future due to mindful practices?
