The smarter way
to do assignments.

Pascal: the smartest choice is to believe in God since we have nothing to lose (due 9/14)
select a specific point (be able to quote the 1-3 sentences that are your focus) with which you strongly agree or disagree*, and explain (1) what the point is, and (2) why you agree/disagree. Your audience for the paper should be a non-classmate, someone who is not familiar with this particular text but is otherwise well-informed.
There are numerous ways to do this assignment well, but the following elements are necessary:
1. CLEAR FRAMING: Your introduction should make clear the focus and “game plan” of the paper: clearly identify the topic and what the reader should expect in the course of the paper – no “surprise endings.” Every paragraph then should play a clear role in the overall argument you are making in your paper.
2. EXPLAIN MATERIAL: In (roughly) the first third of your paper, you should explain what the author is saying and in a general sense, why (perhaps explain his argument for the point, if he gives one, or the place the claim has in the context of the reading as a whole).
3. ANALYZE MATERIAL: In (roughly) the remaining two-thirds of your paper, you should build a case in defense of your own position (take one side only – either object or support).
– Object (strongly suggested): show problem(s) with author’s position/argument
– Support: suggest ways of further strengthening author’s position/argument (e.g., suggest potential problem(s) and how to fix it/them; suggest additional supporting evidence; etc.)
Feel free to play devil’s advocate – it is probably easier to defend a position you actually believe in, but the point of this paper is to display analytic and critical thinking skills, and it is certainly possible to do this while defending something you do not strongly agree with, or may even disagree with.
