Compose a draft of a short piece of fiction inspired by Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl.” Your piece can be inspired by real life but does not have to reflect actual individuals or experiences or episodes, although it can if you like. This is fiction, not autobiography, although some writers nowadays like to use the term “automythography” to describe fiction that is closely inspired by or based on life experiences.
Your piece should draw inspiration from Kincaid’s tone, mood, voice, seriousness of content, intention, and, importantly, sense of humor. You should rely upon the repetition of simple phrases expressing such things as–but not limited to–directions, instructions, do’s and don’t’s, orders/commands, warnings, prohibitions, restrictions, as well as explanations, reasons, evaluations, judgments, advice, suggestions, and questions.
Note that Kincaid’s piece has a strong cultural identity and orientation. It speaks honestly, frankly, sometimes bluntly, and combines the heavy with the light, the seriousness and gravity of concerns about education, manners, upbringing, proper behavior, religion and superstition, with some of the more pleasant aspects of life, including gardening, growing, harvesting and preparing food, meeting people, establishing relationships, looking good, wearing clothes, singing, flirting, developing pride and self-esteem,
Your piece must be original, entirely your own. Your piece must be a fully formed working draft (not rough, not brief, not random) of 700 words. You will bring your piece to class, share it with your peers, receive feedback and suggestions, and use that to develop it further so that finished version will represent a noticeable development from the working draft.
Title: again, be original; don’t go for the obvious “Girl” or “Boy” or “Person,” etc. Although “Lifeguard,” “Grocery Clerk,” and “Mongoose” sound promising
Please write about basketball player, and what they should do and not.
